Valentine's Dinner on the Concorde

British Airways have announced a charity auction that will allow a pair of high-flying romantics to enjoy the ultimate Valentines dinner date.

The airline is inviting couples to bid in the auction for the chance to be wined and dined on board the world’s most iconic aircraft – without even leaving the ground.

The highest bidder will win a romantic dinner for two on board the British Airways flagship Concorde G-BOAC at Manchester Airport’s Runway Visitor Park on Feb. 14.

The lucky couple will receive red carpet treatment from the steps of Concorde to their exclusive table for two in the main cabin, where they will be served a three-course dinner – created by a top chef – with a bottle of champagne.

Anyone is welcome to bid for the Valentine’s Day dinner on Concorde in the company’s email auction.

The prize will be awarded to the highest bidder and there is a reserve price of £500. The auction closes on Sunday, February 12 at midnight and the winner will be notified on Monday, February 13.

The Downton Abbey is an ITV drama set in 1912 about the Crawley household. It is written by Julian Fellowes and stars Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, and Elizabeth McGovern.
The show is the most successful British period drama since Brideshead Revisited.The series - which is regularly watched by around 10 million viewers - follows the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants at the start of the First World War.

Storyline
Lord Crawley sees his family heritage, especially the grand country home Downton Abbey, as his mission in life. The death of his heir aboard the Titanic means distant cousin Matthew Crawley, a Manchester lawyer, suddenly is next in line and accepts moving onto the vast estate with his even more modernist, socially engaged mother, who clashes with his lordship's domineering, conservative ma the dowager. Marrying off the daughters is another concern. Meanwile the butler presides over a staff which serves the family but also lead most of their entire lives in the servants quarters, intriguing amongst themselves.

Here are five reasons you should catch up with Downton Abbey

The romance:

No British period drama is complete without romances, and Downton Abbey has scores. More often than not, the love stories are painful affairs so, so many longing looks whether they are among the aristocrats, the servants or a mingling of the two. One of the most surprising catches is Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens, pictured), a distant cousin to the Earl who becomes heir to the estate. A solicitor with an upper-middle class upbringing, Matthew begins as a bumbling intrusion into everyones life but slowly grows on the family. Especially Lady Mary.

The stoicism:

Speaking of Mary (pictured), she has tortured looks down to a science. When shes not cold and calculating, shes trying to put up a solid front to hide her conflicting feelings. And isn't that the British way? From the top of the social ladder to the bottom, each Downton dweller knows how to present a brave face when adversity comes calling. Honor and duty aren't simply platitudes for most of them, although some of the servants are sneakier than others. The way of life is presented so genuinely by creator Julian Fellowes, viewers can't help but be charmed as well as moved. His treatment is respectful, not romanticized. Set during World War I, Season Two certainly ups the drama by showing how no estate, much less family, went unscathed during the period. Everyone has to sacrifice, but everyone soldiers on.

The classes:

The household staff of Downton Abbey is just as fascinating as the noble residents, and Downtown works by weaving the two worlds together to show how each side relies on the other. While Lord Grantham and his family certainly believe in social stations, they are kind toward the service staff, sometimes even going out of their way to help them out. But the classes can clash, especially as society and politics change. As the years pass, the aristocrats see their way of life, if not entirely threatened, at least questioned, even among their own.

The costumes:

Downtown Abbey is period fashion porn. The attention to detail is stunning, and with the first two seasons set in years 1914 to 1919, the costumes help tell the story of the changing times. The gowns began to be a bit shorter and a bit looser, and with the upcoming Season Three (to debut next fall in the U.K.) to be set in the 1920s, we can expect even more radical change.

Dame Maggie Smith:

As the Dowager Countess, Lord Grantham's mother, Smith does her best to steal every scene with a wisecrack here and an eye-roll there. (She won an Emmy for Season One.) The Countess is old-fashioned, to be sure, but she's realistic. You can rely on her to provide quips at the dinner table and to meddle in people's affairs. And she's fabulous.

So is Downtown Abbey.

Through a pledge we sent out from out blogs we managed to find a generous and kind sponsor to save Abdul Kareem’s cancer infected leg by providing treatment for him. The amount of people who were touched by his case and wanted to help out in any way possible was overwhelming.

Unfortunately cancer patients are still being discovered everyday and not all of them can afford to have treatment. Such is the case of little baby Fahad born to a Kuwaiti mother and a Syrian father. He has lukimeia. He needs bone marrow transplant. None of his family members can be donors as they are not compatible. He can have the transplant in India but he needs 37 thousands KD. Why isn’t he able to have his transplant in Kuwait when we is beyond me but his medical report is here if you know how to read the medical language (Medical Report PDF).

In Abdul Kareem’s case it was a pledge to save his leg. In Baby Fahad’s case its a pledge to give him a chance to grow up and living a life. To grow up, to go to school, to eat, to laugh, to play, to fast Ramadan and enjoy the ups and downs of life. To get married and have babies of his own. To have a death bed with his children and grandchildren gathered around him as he takes his last breaths. A life!

Aston Martin V12 Zagato set for Kuwait debut

Luxury British automotive brand Aston Martin is to unveil the first production model of its V12 Zagato in Kuwait next month.

The V12 Zagato first premiered at the Villa D’Este Concours in May last year, but has until now only been seen in race specification whizzing around the Nürburgring.

The production version intended for customers will be seen for the first time at the Kuwait Concours d’Elegance, which runs February 15-18.

The first deliveries of the £330,000 model are expected later this year, although would-be buyers will need to be quick as only 150 specimens of the Zagato will be hand-built by Aston Martin.

The model, based on the V12 Vantage, features a 6.0-liter V12 engine producing 510 bhp (380 kW) and a aluminum and carbon-fiber body with a bespoke interior.

Italian design house Zagato has refreshed the Vantage’s look to produce a sleek new, widely-praised exterior which appears to account for much of the astronomical price tag and celebrates 50 years of partnership between the two firms.

Users of the Bloomberg Terminal may qualify as some of the richest worldwide, but Bloomberg has decided to launch a new luxury lifestyle magazine targeting this demographic at no cost anyway. The first edition of Bloomberg Pursuits will release next month, available to the 310,000 subscribers of the Bloomberg Professional service, who put out around $20,000 each year to receive the Terminal computer service, reported WWD.

Bloomberg Pursuits was hatched out of Bloomberg Markets, a monthly business magazine also distributed to Terminal users. Each magazine boasts a circulation of 375,000.

“You can’t get our audience anywhere else,” said David Bowling, advertising director at Bloomberg Pursuits, which will offer a fabulous deal to advertisers seeking to reach this wealthy demographic.

Readers have a highly global spread, with approximately 60 percent of the distribution occurring overseas, especially in key financial markets such as the U.K., Japan, Hong Kong and Germany. The average household income of the new magazine’s users is $452,000, and 90 percent of readers are men.

The first issue boasts 46 pages of content and 30 pages of advertising, exhibiting labels such as Hermès, Chanel, Zegna, Rolls-Royce and NetJets. The following issue will be released during the fourth quarter, and the magazine will be published quarterly starting in 2013. It will face some serious competition for ad money from other business-geared titles, such as WSJ, Departures, ForbesLife, Robb Report and the Financial Times’ How to Spend It.

Bloomberg Pursuits hopes to stand out from the crowd by highlighting its own readership and experimenting with its passions. The debut issue will feature profiles of subscribers, such as a reader who journeys to Antarctica to see a solar eclipse, one who constructs his own racing yacht and one who collects Ferraris in order to take them apart and rebuild them.

“Our readers don’t just own and appreciate luxury. They have a command and mastery of their toys,” Vince Bielski, editor of Bloomberg Pursuits, noted.

Fashion pages will highlight Terminal users, including as Manhattan’s Jean-Francois Collard, head of quantitative research at Pulse Capital Partners, who will be displayed showcasing suits in the first issue.

Record Number of Diamonds Set in One Ring

The Lobortas Classic Jewelry House of Kiev, Ukraine has entered the record books by setting 2,525 diamonds in one ring.

The “Tsarevna Swan” ring was presented and measured in Kiev on July 21, 2011, the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed.

The diamonds range from 0.001-0.05 carats with a total weight of 10.48 carats. All of the diamonds are of G color and range from VVS2 to VS1 in clarity.

The diamonds were supplied by Shrenuj Group, a diamond and diamond jewelry manufacturer based in Mumbai, India.

The design and development of the ring took 530 hours and fabrication took 3,625 hours. Lobortas has set the price of the ring at $1.3 million.

Suri is one of the lucky few to have doting parents (who are indeed going to fulfill her requests in case you wondered) and who can afford to do so. Merry Christmas Suri.

If Bottega Veneta is worldwide renowned for its superior Italian craftsmanship in creating amazing and original leather products like bags, shoes, wallets, belts and even jewellery, its domain of competence is not only limited to your sense of fashion but it can also glamour up your home.

The luxury brand has released a beautiful range of picture frames and photo album called intrecciato, meaning intertwined in Italian, due to the elegant woven nappa leather used to decorate the frames and the album covers.

The frames are available in a range of natural colours (ebano, nero, uniform and ash) and in three different sizes, small (10 cm x 15 cm), medium (13 cm x 20 cm) and large (27 cm x 31 cm). As for the classic photo album, it is only available in one size of 37 cm on 25,5 cm, same for the travel photo album of 12 cm on 16 cm.

The handcrafted products are priced between 285 £ and 310 £ (about 340 € to 370 €) for the small frames, 390 £ (approximately 465 €) for the medium ones and 465 £ (about 555 €) for the large ones. The photo album costs 570 £ (approximately 680 €) and the travel version 300 £ (about 360 €).

Available only at Bottega Veneta’s stores, these warm and sophisticated accessories will add a subtle touch of elegance to any interior.

Italian fashion house Versace recently opened its first boutique in Milan dedicated to kids’ line Young Versace, geared toward boys and girls from 0 to 12 years old.

Young Versace is located on the ground floor of the company’s headquarters on Via Borgospesso and is quite small at 538 square feet.

The store will offer the line’s inaugural Spring 2012 collection, which includes zipper-detailed tops, studded hoodies and skirts with the brand’s key motif.

Britain’s biggest restaurant opens in Bristol

BRITAIN'S biggest restaurant threw opened its doors — serving up to a staggering 2,100 diners a night.
Za Za Bazaar, an all-you-can-eat buffet in Bristol, hopes to dish up more than a TON of rice and nearly 5,000 chickens every week.

The 30,000 sq/ft harbourside eatery can seat more than 1,000 customers at a time, with two sittings per night.

But the 120 staff will have their work cut out — with a whopping 8,000 dirty dishes to wash on a busy Saturday night.

The restaurant is the first of a new nationwide chain of eight Za Za Bazaars, the owners of which hope to create 1,000 new jobs over the next 18 months.

The eatery has been styled to look like the street markets of the Far East, but it serves food from all four corners of the globe.

And a team of 36 chefs and eight porters serve up everything from Chinese, Indian and Tex-Mex to piri piri chicken, pasta, pizza and traditional British food.

There is also salad, sushi and deli sections, an entire stand devoted to desserts, and a bar serving 300 different drinks from five continents.

The project is the brainchild of Nitin Bhatnagar, a renowned international chef who learnt his trade at the famous Taj Mahal restaurant in Mumbai.

Renowned Belgian chocolatier Paul Wittamer has created in collaboration with jeweller Fabienne Lascar a beautiful and expensive treat, a praline worth 180 000 €.

The world’s most expensive praline is a culinary piece of art, made of the finest dark ganache, caramel, with a touch of ginger and a dressing of edible gold leaf. But what justifies the price tag, is the 3,63 carat diamond majestically topping the praline, wrapped in a specially crafted packaging presenting the sweet like a real jewel.

A more affordable version of the praline, decorated with zirconium instead of an actual diamond is also available, prices begins at 20 € a piece depending on the gem’s size.

Roberto Coin’s Giant Gold Table now on sale in Dubai

Unlike most gold and diamond covered curios that are merely made as proof of concept, this 24 karat Gold Table made by Roberto Coin is actually up for sale at the Wafi Mall in Dubai. There are actually a few pieces (its strictly limited edition) but it boggles the mind that there is more then one at all. The table top resembles a giant coin held up by four planks. The table is made from stainless steel and wood and then coated with a thick layer of 24 karat gold. The house hold help certainly wont mind wiping this table clean more then a few times a day.

As with all products from Roberto Coin, this table too has a hidden ruby inlaid into the table. The table is available for a retail price of $48,600 (~ AED 180,000). The gold in question is not simply plated onto the table but carefully applied by hand. According to the designer, this gives the table a luster that is simply not possible by electro-plating.
